Ronda has been under Muslim rule for most of its history. In 1485, the city was conquered by the Marquis of Cadiz and most of the old buildings were renovated or adapted to Christian roles.
After 1492, when the last outpost of the Muslim presence, the city of Granada was conquered. Many Muslims fled, while others converted to Christianity. The city of Ronda becomes one of the islands of the rebel movement.
